Professor Tendeloo, a world leader in transmission electron microscopy and chairman of the LMA scientific advisory committee, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate on 2 June in the auditorium of the Central Campus.

The proposal of the Faculty of Science, promoted by professors Ricardo Ibarra and Pilar Cea, recognises the academic prestige of Tendeloo (University of Antwerp, Belgium) who, with more than 1,000 scientific publications, 60,000 citations and an h-index of 115, is one of the leading figures in TEM microscopy research.

Gustaf Van Tendeloo and LMA

Professor Van Tendenloo’s link with the University of Zaragoza was born in parallel to the creation of the LMA. The arrival of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopes (Titans) marked a new stage in the development of nanoscience and nanomaterials at our University. These instruments have meant a qualitative and quantitative leap in the scientific contributions of different research groups that have benefited from this facility. The national and international recognition of the LMA has been consolidated thanks to the contributions and constant support of Professor Van Tendenloo.

From his position as chairman of the LMA Scientific Advisory Committee, he has closely followed the evolution and advised on the strategy and direction of the lines of research to be developed. This proximity and the knowledge of the promising values of the incipient area of electron microscopy, in 2010 led him to consider the University of Zaragoza as one of the 10 nodes of the European consortium ESTEEM2, a project that he led and that has meant the attraction of users in the international context and the location of the LMA on the map of electron microscopy in Europe. During the development of this project, dozens of microscopy projects at European level were included in the LMA, which allowed the map of collaborations to be expanded and the international vision to be strengthened.

The ceremony and the conference

Professor Van Tendeloo’s lecture The world of atoms, addressed how in recent decades nanotechnology governs our lives. Applications such as artificial intelligence require more and more memory and faster switching.
